Erhu Accessories: A Complete Guide for Enthusiasts

Like any instrument, the Erhu requires additional accessories to maintain its health, enhance its sound, and ultimately, elevate your playing experience.

This guide explores the essential Erhu accessories, from must-have items to those that cater to specific preferences, empowering you to take your musical journey to the next level.

Essential Erhu Accessories:

  • Erhu Strings: Spare strings are vital. Although they do not break easily (unless you mishandle it), they can become 'dead' after playing for some time. Changing strings after a while refreshes the tone of the Erhu.

  • String Fuel: This lubricant is applied to the strings to prevent them from getting sticky due to rosin buildup, making it easier to slide your fingers along the strings.

  • Erhu Pickup: If you want to amplify the sound of your Erhu, you can connect it to a speaker using a pickup.

  • Snake Skin Protector Tape: This tape protects the snakeskin protector that protects the snakeskin on the Erhu's soundbox.

  • Erhu Mute: A mute is a small device that you can attach to the bridge to soften the sound of your Erhu. This is useful for practicing without disturbing others.

  • Erhu Bridges: The bridge plays a crucial role in the sound of your Erhu. Different bridges can produce different tones. We recommend trying out a variety of bridges to find the one that suits your playing style and preferences. Our favourite is the 4,300-year-old bridge, which we think is the best bridge we have come across so far.

  • Qianjin: Qianjin refers to the string loops that hold the strings in place at the top of the Erhu. These can wear out over time and need to be retied. You can buy a pack to keep in case you need to have them retied.

  • Books: While online resources and teachers remain invaluable, Erhu books offer a structured and comprehensive learning experience that is both self-paced and readily accessible. They are an essential companion for any beginner eager to embark on their exciting Erhu journey

Additional Accessories:

  • Erhu Stand: While not essential for playing, an Erhu stand is a convenient way to store your instrument safely when not in use.

  • Rosin: Rosin is applied to the bow hair to create friction, which allows the bow to vibrate the strings and produce sound. One rosin can last for months if you use it regularly.

  • Erhu Bow: The Erhu already comes with a bow. It is not necessary to get an extra one yet as they can last for years. You can buy another one if you want to experiment with how different Erhu bows feel and sound.

  • Erhu Belt Clip: The belt clip is something you attach to the base of your Erhu and subsequently clip it on your belt so that you can play it standing up or walking around.

By having these essential accessories on hand, you can ensure your instrument is well-maintained, protected, and ready to play at its best.
